Welcome to Evilness Yet more Tory Patronage
The Harper Conservatives seem to be unable to help themselves, or at least their supporters, with yet more patronage appointments. It would appear that the new board of directors of the Toronto Island Airport just happen to all be Tory supporters. Naturally, the National Post, which printed the story, spent most of the article trying to spin things in favor of the Conservatives and discredit the NDP MP who made the discovery.
Canadian government gives Bush Administration gift...
...of $450 million dollars. To be accurate, the Harper government, through the softwood lumber deal that they've negotiated, provide as part of the $1 billion that won't be coming back to Canada $450 million into a slush fund that the Bush White House can spend as it sees fit. No congressional oversight, no real strings on how the money can be spent. Under the deal, the money has to go to the White House by the 1st of September, just in time for the campaign kick off for the mid-term elections.
Meme's – when you don't have something to write about.
Post a list of 10(ish) books/movies/TV shows that you've had a fannish love of at some time in your life.
-- Have your friends guess your favorite character from each one. -- You can cross out the show/movie/book and put the character when someone guesses.
UPDATE: 08 Oct 2006 Since no one else has guessed, I've completed the list. Conservative Party != Democracy
Stephen Harper spoke during the last election on how the Conservative Party was better than the others because it would be more open and accountable. So far, Harper's government and party have done everything to show that it's not going to be open and accountable. Items such as claiming that even MP's must win a nomination process but then making it next to impossible for someone to challenge an MP shows the level of hypocrisy the party will stoop to.
Goodwin's Law Hits Politics
The Tories have been making it so easy to write about politics these days. Here's a another doozie, this time from the mouth of the Prime Minister's parliamentary secretary, Jason Kenney.
Schadenfreude - it's not just for breakfast anymore.
It would appear that my MLA, the infamous MIA-MLA Hung Pham, is in the news again. This time it's because he's under investigation by the ethics commissioner (Calgary Herald, 19 Aug 2006) for his part in a $20,000 government grant given to the Applewood Community Association. Seems the money didn't end up where it was supposed to go and the government wants it back. Pham used his position as MLA to get the money for the Community Association.
The Vanguard Party
I heard an interesting thing on CBC on my way into work this morning. Victor Doerksen, in his speech outlining what he'd do as leader of the Alberta Tories, indicated that he would change the process in which party members communicate with the government. This points to two scary things, first the current government is ignoring it's own party members, second, the only problem with that in the eyes of the Tories is that the government is ignoring them and to heck with the rest of Albertans.
Man of the People he isn't.
It would appear that during his six day tour of Canada's North, Stephen Harper wasn't very available. He met only with some carefully selected people and everyone else was kept at bay by dark suited security guards. It would appear the Harper doesn't want any people that might disagree with him around him.
They Just Don't Give Up.
It would appear that the Klein government has re-introduced the "Third Way". No press release or announcement was made. This government will stop at nothing to get its way, certainly not the objections of the voters. After all, the American private insurance and medical corporations have paid big bucks for the Alberta Tories to let them in the door.
Tories Throw Arabs a Bone
During his whirlwind tour of Canada's North, Stephen Harper has thrown Arab-Canadians a bone. Harper announced $25 million in aid for Lebanon. He emphasized that this was a large amount and that it would be funneled through "legitimate" aid agencies. A more important announcement was that Canada would not be sending troops to take part in the UN peacekeeping force that will be deployed to the region.
