My understanding is that they've changed what they call XML so that they can patent it and charge licensing fees for their so-called "open" standard. If you don't pay, you don't get to use. It's all about preventing interoperability of anything non-Microsoft with them. They've only moved ahead slightly by co-opting the XML standard and attempting to change it like they tried with HTML and Internet Exploder...
